PENGARUH INFUSA DAN PERASAN UMBI BIT (Beta vulgaris L) TERHADAP PENURUNAN KADAR GLUKOSA DARAH MENCIT JANTAN (Mus muscullus) YANG DIINDUKSI ALOKSAN

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease with high prevalence and potential for serious complications. Long-term use of synthetic antidiabetic drugs may cause adverse effects, making natural alternatives necessary. Beetroot is known to be rich in bioactive compounds such as betalains, flavonoids, polyphenols, and nitrates, which possess antioxidant activity and are suggested to contribute to blood glucose reduction. This study aimed to evaluate the hypoglycemic activity of beetroot infusion (IUB) and beetroot juice (PUB) in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. The study employed a true experimental design with a post-test control group design. Results showed that after induction, blood glucose levels increased significantly in all groups except the normal group. After treatment, glimepiride reduced blood glucose by 79.77%, IUB by 68.12%, and PUB by 65.67%, with significant differences compared to the negative control (p<0.05). The hypoglycemic mechanism of beetroot is likely related to the role of betalains in protecting pancreatic β-cells from oxidative stress, flavonoids and polyphenols in inhibiting α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes, and nitrates in improving insulin sensitivity through the nitric oxide pathway. In conclusion, IUB and PUB demonstrated significant hypoglycemic effects in alloxan-induced diabetic mice, although their efficacy was lower than glimepiride. Beetroot has the potential to be developed as an adjunct phytotherapeutic agent in diabetes management, although further research in humans is required to determine the optimal dose, safety, and more specific molecular mechanisms.
