The development of natural sunscreens is essential to address the potential irritancy and environmental impact of synthetic sunscreens. Excessive UV radiation exposure poses risks of acute skin damage to cancer, while synthetic sunscreens such as oxybenzone have been associated with skin irritation and environmental concerns. This study aimed to characterize the phytochemical profile and quality parameters of 70% ethanol extract of Etlingera elatior leaves and Helianthus annuus L. seed oil, and evaluate the in vitro SPF activity of each substance and their combination (2:1 ratio). Extraction was performed by maceration (leaves) and cold pressing (seeds). SPF was measured in triplicate (n=3) at 290–320 nm using the Mansur equation in 96% ethanol (10 mg/mL). Results demonstrated that the kecombrang extract complied with the Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia standards, while the sunflower seed oil met Indonesian National Standards (SNI). The SPF values were 16.35 ± 0.10 (Ultra) for kecombrang extract, 5.34 ± 0.02 (Moderate) for seed oil, and 13.07 ± 0.02 (Maximum) for the combination. These findings support the potential development of topical natural photoprotective formulations, such as gel or cream dosage forms.
