Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia, characterized by elevated blood cholesterol, is recognized as a key risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Statin drugs, such as simvastatin, effectively reduce cholesterol levels but may cause side effects with long-term use. Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) leaves contain flavonoid compounds that may serve as a natural antihypercholesterolemic agent. The objective of this study was to investigate the cholesterol-lowering effect of capsules containing rambutan leaf ethanol extract in male Swiss Webster mice (Mus musculus). A total of twenty-five animals were randomly allocated into five groups: a positive control (simvastatin), a negative control, and three treatment groups receiving extract doses of 10, 20, and 40 mg/kgbw. Capsule physical evaluations included flow time (8.27–8.72 seconds), angle of repose (32°–36°), compressibility (7.4–15%), moisture content (2.8–3.9%), weight uniformity (199.85–199.97 mg ± <1 mg), and disintegration time (1.09–1.86 minutes), all meeting pharmacopeial standards. Cholesterol levels were measured and statistical testing showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the treatment groups compared to the negative control. The 40 mg/kgbw dose produced the highest cholesterol reduction (30.9%) and was not significantly different from simvastatin (p<0.05). These results suggest that ethanol extract capsules of rambutan leaves have potential as an alternative natural cholesterol-lowering therapy.
